Twink Ascending

Date: 1 Sep 2018

Masculinity, dating-app culture, social media and body image are just some of the issues explore by Andy Johnston in this one-hour, one man show.

Touching on “all things beautiful, embarrassing and down right dirty”, Twink Ascending combines elements of cabaret, drag, physical theatre, spoken word and song.

Says Johnston: “It’s about how we identify within the community, how we communicate and connect which each other and ourselves amidst a daily onslaught of homophobia, misogyny and body shaming from within the community itself.

“I’m interested in the idea of the public self vs the private self and how I navigate my day to day life between those two places. I feel a constant pressure from social media and the gay community to be hotter, richer, better and this show is about finding a way back to who I am and being OK with that.”
