The Iliad – Out Loud

Date: 12 Dec 2018

Presented in three parts over three nights by William Zappa, Homer’s account of the last weeks of the 10-year siege of Troy is the HBO series of its time, a sweeping, bloody panorama of war cut with intimate scenes revealing the emotional lives and frailties of those whose names echo down the ages: the Greeks Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus and Ajax; the Trojans Hector, Paris and Priam, and Helen, the abducted Spartan queen.

Working from multiple translations of Homer’s text – from Alexander Pope’s of 1720 to Caroline Alexander’s, published in 2015 – Zappa brings poetic rhythm and a distinctive, accessible Australian voice to an immortal epic dating back nearly 3000 years.

Featuring a live percussion score, the performance will unfold over nine hours over three days. Audiences can book for part of it, or settle in for a binge-view of this seminal statement on humanity.
