Merrily We Roll Along

Date: 26 Feb 2018

Stephen Sondheim and George Furth, the authors of the classic Company, turned the traditional showbiz musical on its head in 1981 with this fable of friendship, compromise and the high price of success.

Franklin Shepard, a successful songwriter and movie producer in his late 30s, reviews his life and relationships with his best friends, song-writing collaborators and his two wives, Beth and Gussie.

The action moves backward in time from 1976 to 1957, from the disappointments of adulthood, to the hopeful idealism of youth.

Merrily famously flopped on Broadway (the story is told in the documentary Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened) but the show, somewhat revised, has gone on to have a successful afterlife.
