Handel’s Athalia

Date: 21 Apr 2018

Commissioned in 1733, Handel’s Athalia brings to life a biblical plot full of intrigue and devious characters.

The murderous, idol-worshipping Queen Athalia is intent on eradicating the line of David. But one has escaped the slaughter: the child Joas has been raised in secret by Josabeth, wife of the high priest Joad. Can Athalia succeed in her dreadful purpose that all heirs to the throne are to be destroyed?

Emma Pearson sings the title role in this Pinchgut Opera production also featuring Miriam Allen, Clint van der Linde, Brenton Spiteri and David Greco.

Lindy Hume directs, Erin Helyard conducts.
