Farnace

Date: 31 Oct 2019

Pinchgut Opera presents the Australian premiere of Vivaldi’s Farnace, a passionate drama of political and dynastic intrigue.

Written by librettist, Antonio Lucchini, Farnace is a passionate and bloody drama of family, duty, and honour. Like Vivaldi’s Bajazet, the action opens with a protagonist who has been beaten into oppression and defeated by sinister forces. All hope is lost. The characters are desperate, frightened, and irrational. War and death surround them.

In Farnace Vivaldi was at the pinnacle of his operatic career: his great gift for orchestral colour and his natural lyrical talent combine here in one of his greatest theatrical triumphs. Pinchgut has assembled some of the world’s finest voices to bring these characters to life and to showcase Vivaldi’s thrilling and poignant melodies.

Christopher Lowrey sings the title role in a production featuring Helen Sherman, Jacqueline Dark and Taryn Fiebig.

Pinchgut Opera Artistic Director Erin Helyard conducts. Mark Gaal directs.
