Cry-Baby

Date: 27 Apr 2021

It’s 1954. Baltimore is a topsy-turvy moral meritocracy.

At the centre of this world are star-crossed lovers Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker – the coolest boy in Baltimore – and his rich but square object of desire, Allison.

Cry-Baby is a bad boy with a great cause – truth, justice and the pursuit of rock and roll – so, fuelled by hormones and the new rhythms of popular music, Allison turns her back on her King-of-the-Squares boyfriend Baldwin to become a ‘Drape’, and Cry-Baby’s girl.

The stage is set for a battle between the squeaky-clean, close-harmony Squares and the rock-and-roll juvenile delinquent Drapes.

Whose side are you on?

Winner of four Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Musical, Best Direction and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical, Alexander Berlage’s production was a hit for the Hayes Theatre in 2018. Christian Charisiou is “Wade ‘Cry Baby’ Walker”, Ashleigh Rubenach is Allison”, Joel Granger is Allison’s boyfriend and King of the Squares, Baldwin, Beth Daly is Allison’s protective grandmother and Alfie Gledhill Cry-Baby’s best friend Dupree.

Due to the evolving Covid situation in Sydney, this production has been cancelled.
