Using Shakespeare’s tragedy Julius Caesar as a source text, Central Coast company Jopuka Productions makes its first foray into contemporary dance theatre with Brutal.

Drawing on the emotive themes of ambition, jealousy and betrayal within small communities pushed to the fringes of society, Brutal brings together elements of contemporary Indigenous dance, music, physical theatre and poetry into a theatrical event set in an imagined Australia 30 years from now.

Co-creator Neville Williams-Boney says that Brutal was created to draw parallels between ancient and modern political motivations and explore the issue of deaths in police custody. “Whether you’re a Roman Emperor, a modern-day Prime Minister, or even the head of a gang, growing power is dangerous in a world driven by ego and idealism,” he says.
